Those sick of the winter weather may be waiting in anticipation for the fateful day that is February 2 — GROUNDHOG DAY.
The all-knowing Punxsutawney Phil will pop out of his burrow in the ground and let us in on the secret meteorologists have been keeping from us. Are we in for more winter weather or getting an early start to spring?
When does Punxsutawney Phil come out for Groundhog Day?
Groundhog Day 2019 will be celebrated at Gobbler’s Knob in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, at about 7:25 a.m. on Saturday, February 2.
That’s when Punxsutawney Phil is anticipated to leave his burrow and look for his shadow for the 133rd time, according to The Punxsutawney Groundhog Club.
The day’s events begin at 3 a.m. Saturday and continue long into the night. There’s a full schedule available here.
And Punxsutawney surely isn’t the only town with a weather-predicting rodent, but it is the most famous.
The tradition and forecast
So if Punxsutawney Phil sees his shadow on Groundhog Day…?
Tradition says it’s a sign that the next six weeks will bring wintry weather.
If he doesn’t, it means an early spring.
If the weather forecast is any indication, he will predict six more weeks of winter. (Which he usually does.)
