Syracuse’s Frank Howard suspended, will miss NCAA tournament game

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — Syracuse will be without starting guard Frank Howard for the start of the NCAA tournament, after he was suspended indefinitely for a violation of Syracuse athletic department policy, the school announced Wednesday afternoon.

Eighth-seeded Syracuse (20-13) meets No. 9 seed Baylor (19-13) in the first round of the NCAA tournament’s West Region on Thursday night.

Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim was vague when asked whether Howard made the trip to Salt Lake City, saying, “He won’t be here with us (Thursday).” Boeheim declined to share who would start in Howard’s place.

Howard, a 6-foot-5 senior who averages 8.9 points per game and has dished out a team-high 84 assists, missed the first four games of the season with an injury. He played some of the best basketball of his career last week, scoring 28 points on 11-of-20 shooting in an 84-72 loss to Duke in the ACC tournament.
