Competition in the athletic shoe business is pretty serious, but Puma picked an inappropriate time to throw some shade.
Not long after Duke freshman Zion Williamson had his Nike shoe blow out on him during Wednesday night’s ESPN game against North Carolina, Puma basketball’s Twitter account tweeted at 9:27 p.m. ET, “Wouldn’t have happened in the pumas”
Williamson, the projected top pick in the NBA draft, fell in pain after the shoe mishap early in the game. He headed to the locker room.
No. 1 Duke later announced that Williamson had a knee injury and wouldn’t be returning. North Carolina won 88-72.
Puma wasn’t alone in piling on Nike, but it apparently thought better about the tweet because it was deleted.
Williamson has a mild sprained knee, and Duke will learn later how long he will be out.
