After an electric introduction, Tiger Woods fell a little flat in his first professional start in Mexico Thursday at the WGC-Mexico Championship.
Woods shot a lackluster even par 71 at Club de Golf Chapultepec on a day where he should’ve shot much lower. Rory McIlroy caught fire with an 8-under 63, followed by Dustin Johnson (-7), Justin Thomas and Matt Kuchar (-5).
But fear not, Tiger fans. There’s no weekend cut at this tournament, meaning we get three more rounds of action from the 80-time PGA Tour winner.
Woods tees off on the back-nine Friday at 12:51 p.m. ET alongside good friend Bryson DeChambeau and crowd-favorite Abraham Ancer. Make sure to follow our live blog for all the action and below for shot-by-shot analysis of Woods’ second round in Mexico City.
Hole 17: Par 3, 179 yards
OFF THE TEE (2:46): The back-left pin with water guarding the front of the green makes this par-3 anything but easy, and the wind in Tiger’s face didn’t help. He lands this one on the front-right of the green, but he’s got a lot of work to do to get to the hole.
ON THE GREEN (2:54 p.m.): Just your casual 58-footer for birdie here. He tried to play this one off the slope but gave it too much juice, and the putt almost rolls off the green. He didn’t leave himself an easy par save, and just misses the edge. That’s the first bogey of the day for Tiger.
TIGER ON THE DAY: 2-under thru 8 (2-under overall).
Hole 16: Par 4, 408 yards
OFF THE TEE (2:31 p.m.): Tiger stripes an iron right down the middle here and is all smiles, as he should be.
APPROACH SHOT (2:37 p.m.): Tiger is dialed in with his approaches right now. He stuffed this one again inside 10 feet for a chance at three birdies in a row.
ON THE GREEN (2:43 p.m.): Looking for his fourth birdie in five holes and third in a row, Tiger just skates this putt by the cup. He’ll clean up for par.
TIGER ON THE DAY: 3-under thru 7 (3-under overall).
Hole 15: Par 5, 572 yards
OFF THE TEE (2:13 p.m.): The Big Cat pulls driver for the first time today and this is one absolutely smoked down the left side of the fairway. Takes an unfortunate kick to the left rough, but no worries there.
APPROACH SHOT (2:19 p.m.): Tiger went right at this one, but he came up just short. He was perfectly on line, but instead winds up in the bunker guarding the front of the green. Should be able to get up-and-down for birdie from there.
AROUND THE GREEN (2:24 p.m.): Awkward stance here for Tiger with his feet on the bank, but it’s no matter. His out is incredible, landing the ball and stopping it just a few feet away. That’ll be a tap-in birdie. He’s got something cookin’ right now.
ON THE GREEN (2:28 p.m.): He cleans up the putt with ease and strolls off the green with some confidence. He got hot yesterday and then immediately cooled off. We’ll see what happens today.
TIGER ON THE DAY: 3-under thru 6 (3-under overall).
Hole 14: Par 4, 496 yards
OFF THE TEE (1:58 p.m.): 3-wood here for Tiger and this one is striped down the middle of the fairway. Looked like he really tried to elevate that one to let the altitude give it a little more distance.
APPROACH SHOT (2:03 p.m): Tiger’s approach here landed on the front of the green, took a big skip ahead and comes to rest just inside 10 feet. Useful shot there from TW.
ON THE GREEN (2:10 p.m.): Sweet stroke here from Tiger, who got a nice line from his playing partner. He sinks the birdie putt for his second of the day.
TIGER ON THE DAY: 2-under thru 5 (2-under overall).
Hole 13: Par 3, 233 yards
OFF THE TEE (1:46 p.m.): Tiger stared this one down and was talking to it, but he didn’t say (or give it) enough. He’s just off the green on the front-left.
AROUND THE GREEN (1:51 p.m.): Tiger’s slow-rolling chip was tracking towards the hole and comes up just short, about five feet away. He played the slope and break of the green almost perfectly.
ON THE GREEN (1:55 p.m.): Tiger cleaned it up for yet another par.
TIGER ON THE DAY: 1-under thru 4 (1-under overall).
Hole 12: Par 4, 413 yards
OFF THE TEE (1:32 p.m.): Another iron here on No. 12 and he gives it a little twirl in the backswing. He’s right down the middle.
APPROACH SHOT (1:36 p.m.): Tiger’s wedge into the green is a nice one and he’ll have a chance to finally score here today. He’s just outside eight feet for his first birdie putt of the day.
ON THE GREEN (1:43 p.m.): Chirp-chirp-chirp! Tiger’s on the board with his first birdie of the day after rolling in the eight-footer.
TIGER ON THE DAY: 1-under thru 3 (1-under overall).
Hole 11: Par 5, 610 yards
OFF THE TEE (1:10 p.m.): 3-wood here for TW and this one is perfectly in the fairway. Beautiful shot.
APPROACH SHOT (1:17 p.m.): Yikes. Tiger went for this one in two with a fairway metal and missed way left. Way left.
AROUND THE GREEN (1:25 p.m.): He wasn’t in too rough of a position for his third shot here, but he didn’t get enough on his swing to make it to the green. He had a clean shot, just goofed it a bit. Still a chance to get up-and-down for par, but definitely an opportunity missed. He didn’t help himself with his fourth shot, a little bump and run towards the cup that comes to rest about six feet away.
ON THE GREEN (1:29 p.m.): He really had to scramble, but he sinks the putt to stay even. Could’ve been way worse.
TIGER ON THE DAY: Even thru 2 (Even overall).
Hole 10: Par 4, 457 yards
OFF THE TEE (12:52 p.m.): Iron to start his round today and this one took a big kick and was trending towards the rough, but took a friendly hop back into the fairway. We’re off and running.
APPROACH SHOT (12:25 p.m.): He launched this one and it finds the rough, near the gallery behind the green. Might’ve hit that one a little too high with the altitude.
AROUND THE GREEN (1:03 p.m.): Great little pitch there from Tiger gets him within a few feet for a chance to save par.
ON THE GREEN (1:08 p.m.): He cleans up the putt and saves par to avoid damage on his first hole.
TIGER ON THE DAY: Even thru 1 (Even overall).
