Everything you need to know

The 2019 CMT Music Awards — country music’s answer to the VMAs — returns to Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena on Wednesday, promising a ton of big-name performers, and likely a surprise or two, when it airs live at 8 p.m. EDT Wednesday, June 5 on CMT. (The telecast will air at 8 p.m. PDT as well.)

Whether you’re tuning in or want to see it in person, here’s what you need to know.

Who’s performing?

Carrie Underwood, Dan + Shay, Keith Urban, Kane Brown, Kelsea Ballerini, Little Big Town, Luke Bryan, Luke Combs, Maren Morris, Sheryl Crow, Thomas Rhett and Zac Brown Band.

Also, the nominees for “Breakthrough Video of the Year” — Jimmie Allen, Jordan Davis, Mitchell Tenpenny, Morgan Wallen, Runaway June and Tenille Townes — will appear on the Ram Trucks Side Stage.

Who’s nominated?

Nominations are vast this year in both number and musical diversity. The top category, Video of the Year, has 14 contenders. That includes Underwood who, with 18 wins, is the most awarded artist in the fan-voted award show’s history. The Video of the Year category was whittled to five nominees announced the morning of the show — Carrie Underwood, Kane Brown, Keith Urban featuring Julia Michaels, Kelsea Ballerini and Luke Combs — and fans will be able to vote for their favorite video all day and throughout the show on Twitter to choose the winner.

As in past years, the CMT Music Awards welcome multi-genre collaborations. This year’s nominations span pop, soul and R&B, and include up-and-comers, stalwarts and stadium headliners, many of which are being recognized by CMT for the first time. R&B group Boyz II Men, soul singer Leon Bridges, Gladys Knight, contemporary pop star Shawn Mendes, singer/songwriter Julia Michaels and rock/Americana Grammy winner Brandi Carlile nabbed their first CMT Awards mentions this year, as did new country music favorites Ashley McBryde, Jimmie Allen, Jordan Davis, Mitchell Tenpenny, Morgan Wallen, Runaway June and Tenille Towns.
