Duke upset by Syracuse in overtime at Cameron Indoor Stadium

No. 2 Duke lost to Syracuse 95-91 in overtime on Monday night at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

Playing without Cam Reddish due to illness and with Tre Jones exiting in the first half due to injury, the Blue Devils lost for just the second time this season, and the first in Atlantic Coast Conference play. Tyus Battle led the way for the Orange with 32 points and was joined in double figures by three others.

Syracuse took the lead at 81-80 with 2:59 to go, setting off a back-and-forth finish. Battle’s step-back jumper with just over a minute to go gave Syracuse an 85-84 lead. Duke freshman sensation Zion Williamson then hit one of two free throws with 17 seconds to go to knot the game. Battle’s 3-pointer at the buzzer didn’t go, sending the game to overtime.

Paschal Chukwu’s put-back dunk gave Syracuse a 95-91 lead in the final minute of overtime, effectively sealing the game.

Williamson finished with 35 points for Duke.

The Orange got off to a slow start, falling in a quick 12-0 hole. But they fought back to enter the break down just one point at 49-48 – thanks to Elijah Hughes’ 3-point heave from Syracuse’s own 3-point-line.

More to come.
