Christian Hackenberg benched in Memphis Express game

After throwing two interceptions in the first half Saturday of an Alliance of American Football game against the Orlando Apollos, the Memphis Express benched quarterback Christian Hackenberg.

Former Tennessee Titans starter Zach Mettenberger, who had not played a snap this season, took over to start the second half.

And he threw a 30-yard touchdown to Devin Lucien on his third pass attempt.

The Apollos took a 9-0 lead into the second half. Mettenberger’s touchdown pass cut the Express’ deficit to 9-6.

In two-plus games as the Memphis starter, Hackenberg, a 2016 second-round pick with the New York Jets, was 32-for-62 for 277 yards. He did not throw a touchdown and has thrown three interceptions.
